CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
Supporting families & children with special needs
Education is still a privilege & not really a right in Uganda ... and everyone has to pay school fees, (no matter how small). But some families just cannot afford the money to send their children to school, and those with disabilities and special needs rarely get an opportunity to experience education.
Children with special needs & disabilities are very misunderstood, and get a very poor deal generally. There are few facilities for such children, & parents and guardians would often not be familiar with the best ways in which to help their children, or know how to access the few helping agencies that are available. We have begun to work in a small way in this area ...and have made some links with a few referral agencies & support groups; but the need is very great and the present possibilities very limited. Often the helping agencies are hundreds of miles away.
None of these children presently go to school.
Some parents waited all day for their children to be seen. There were many problems, varying from hearing problems, eye, ear & throat infections, to more difficult issues of physical & mental disabilities.
On a day just after Easter 2009, we said we would 'assess' children with special needs and arranged to meet in the local compound area in Kitumba. Many, many mothers and guardians brought their children for help, and travelled many miles with their children - just for a bit of support....
We are presently working, in a small way, with referral agencies and support networks to seek assistance and information for these children............ We have 60 families working with us who are in need of help, and others on a waiting list ....
